New Patients

Due to all of the wonderful referrals from current patients and colleagues, we have filled all of our new patient appointments at this time. We will always accept siblings of existing patients and will try to accommodate referrals from general dentists and pediatricians as spots open up. Please understand that we want to see everyone, but our office is small. Don't give up. Check back in January 2012 for another update. Thank you so much for your support and confidence. I love taking care of your children.
Sincerely,
Alison Jackson

FDA Warning

FDA Warns of Complications with Teething Gels Containing Benzocaine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received reports of methemoglobinemia, a rare but serious blood disorder that is associated with pain relievers, including teething gels, that contain benzocaine sold under the brand names Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, Orabase and generic brands.

Methemoglobinemia is a serious blood disorder that reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood stream and, in severe cases, can lead to death. Symptoms, which could possibly follow a single application of benzocaine with concentrations as low as 7.5 percent, include pale, gray or blue-colored skin, lips, and nail beds; shortness of breath; fatigue; confusion; headache; lightheadedness; and rapid heart rate .

The FDA is advising health care professionals to refer to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for teething, which recommend giving infants and toddlers a chilled (not frozen) teething ring or gently rubbing or massaging the gums with a finger instead of using benzocaine to relieve the symptoms.

For more information, visit the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm250024.htm and the ADA website at http://www.ada.org/news/5731.aspx.

Welcome Dr. Juei Kao

Dear Families, Friends and Colleagues:

I would like to introduce Dr. Juei Kao. Many of you may have already met Dr. Kao over the past four years; he often takes care of our patients in my absence. We are excited to announce that he has decided to join our team as an associate member of the practice.

Dr. Kao is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Dental Program and he received his pediatric dental training and certificate at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Kao is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF. Additionally, he has been a valuable member of the Dientes pediatric dental team here in Santa Cruz for the past four years. Dr Kao is involved in multiple dental organizations, including the California Society for Pediatric Dentistry and the ADA. Since returning to California, Dr. Kao has made it his priority to provide pediatric dental care to underserved populations in the Bay Area and Central Coast.
Dr. Kao is a very soft spoken, gentle pediatric dentist who provides excellent care to his infant through teen patients. He enjoys bringing his love of jazz and classical music into the office to share with our staff and patients. I am excited to have a colleague to share ideas with and we feel very lucky to have him as part of our team.

Thanks to the addition of Dr. Kao, our office will be open two additional days per month to help accommodate many of the wonderful new patients many of you have been referring to our office. I appreciate your confidence in our office and it is my intent to provide all of my patients with the highest level of service and care possible. The addition of Dr. Kao to our team will help us achieve this goal.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alison Jackson and Team
